Nuestra historia comienza con el desembarco de Niko Bellic antiguo soldado e inmigrante de Europa del Este (el protagonista del juego) en la ciudad Liberty City con un objetivo marcado, conseguir el sueño americano. El problema de Niko es que desde el momento que pisa tierra firme le toca situarse al otro lado de la ley y comenzar a realizar trabajos para los mafiosos que se encuentran en Libety City como nuestro propio primo Roman Bellic, Little Jacob, unos rusos llamados Dimitri y Mikhail entre otros mafiosillos de esta ciudad ambientada en Nueva Cork.
Pero no os preocupéis porque en este nuevo juego de la saga seguimos teniendo la misma libertad de acción para hacer prácticamente lo que nos plazca y para comenzar nunca bien mal disfrutar un poco de la libertad sin limites de GTA (la ciudad está compuesta por un total de seis islas) coger un coche, moto, helicóptero o lancha y conocer un poco nuestra nueva ciudad y las posibilidades que nos ofrece.
